Lindsay Hoogendam founded Beach Tutors in 2018 with over 18 years of experience with tutoring children of all ages. Lindsay has been teaching since 2001 after graduating from Pepperdine University with a teaching credential and minor in Spanish. She previously taught 3rd grade in the Pacific Palisades for five years and moved to Southern China to teach university while simultaneously earning her masters in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages). Lindsay eventually moved back to her hometown of Long Beach to start a family after traveling the world and teaching.
Her passion to make education enjoyable and the learning of challenging concepts attainable for all students makes her students come back year after year. She teaches her students like she is teaching her own children and finds the best, most qualified tutors to make learning enjoyable while helping students excel in confidence. In her spare time, she loves teaching, traveling, baking, playing games and ethnic food!
Rachel Wood is a Math Tutor and Data Analytics Consultant with 15+ years of tutoring experience. She earned her B.S. in Mathematics and Economics from UCLA. After university, she spent 3 years living abroad in China working in education and microfinance. Currently, she works for a consulting company as a Senior Data Analyst. She leads teams across all stages of diverse technology and data analytics projects. She helps perform data analytics as well as create data visualizations for clients to comprehend their data in a clean and concise way.
Rachel is extremely passionate about explaining mathematical concepts in ways that break down barriers most people encounter. In her spare time, she volunteers with an educational non-profit to provide math tutoring for low income families. She also enjoys running, yoga, baking, speaking other languages and traveling around the world.
Daphne Wells earned her B.A in Liberal Studies and a Multiple Subject Credential from Cal State University of Long Beach. Currently, Daphne is a substitute teacher in the Long Beach District. She has over 10 years of experience working with youth from ages 5-12 years old. From those amazing experiences, she has worked with a diverse group of children which has only made her a stronger teacher and leader. Daphne believes that one of the greatest gifts we can give children is to instill in them a strong sense of confidence.
Daphne has a genuine passion and love for teaching. She especially enjoys helping students improve their reading comprehension and writing skills. Science and Social Studies are other content areas Daphne personally loves to teach as she sees the children’s excitement as she makes the content come to life by making text to self connections and incorporating hands on activities whenever possible.
On Daphne’s free time, she loves to read, spend time with her family and two cats, go to the beach at any chance she gets and loves to dance!
Claudia Johnston is currently a 4th grade teacher with 15+ years of combined classroom experience. She earned her B.A. in Liberal studies with an emphasis in Education and a Multiple subject credential from Cal State Fullerton and holds an M.A. in Reading and Literacy from Grand Canyon University. Currently, she sits on the RTI team, working with fellow teachers and administrators to effectively analyze school and student performance data and plan effective intervention plans. She loves teaching and exploring all content areas with her students, especially reading, writing and math. Witnessing growth and learning in action is one of her life’s joys.
Claudia is passionate about developing students into writers, teaching them to transfer ideas into well organized and clear compositions. She specializes in identifying literacy gaps and systematically addressing and growing reading skills. She understands the academic rigor required for students to succeed, and takes pride in supporting children towards progress and success. She spends her free time planning/taking road trips, reading, cooking, enjoying California’s beauty, and soaking up quality time with family and friends.
Julia Rodriguez graduated from San Francisco State University with a BA in Liberal Studies with a minor in Education. During her time at San Francisco State, she had the opportunity to travel and study abroad at the University of Amsterdam! Traveling is one of her many passions and she hopes to teach English as a foreign language in Spain someday. Teaching has always been the career of choice ever since a young age. Julia loves nothing more than supporting children in flourishing and reaching their highest potential in education! Aside from tutoring, she works as an Applied Behavior Analysis therapist where she places appropriate behavioral interventions to enhance their overall behavior. She loves to spend her free time outdoors whether that be hiking or hanging out at the beach! She also cherishes the moments she spends with family and friends 😊
